We now have $2m more (~$15m total, I believe) to spend in free agency.

Why?Joe ThorntonWhat exposed player would you expect to have the most value at the '18 deadline (assume LV is out of it then) if you had to choose
It's a two-part question really...
Why does Thornton sign there...? A guy that could really use a Cup isn't likely to play for an expansion team...
&
Why does he sign a one-year deal if he's going to play for an expansion team...Thornton's value drops dramatically if he signs a multi-year deal...which would be the only redeeming factor about signing in Vegas...
Best asset pieces here are the same best asset pieces as they are at any other time...top-4 veteran d-men with expiring deals...Hamhuis, Cole, etc. There's no magic here...

Probably. What's the alternative...?We can sign bonino. But should we?We now have $2m more (~$15m total, I believe) to spend in free agency.

That was my list as well, I believe the thinking is that you want them to take fleury, you would take dumo or Schultz over fleury, not rust or Cole.

Who is that? He looks like a 60-year-old Jagr.

My reasoning, as well. I really like Bonino, and think he'd be worth the $4m range that I hope Rutherford attempts to sign him at.Having a slightly less expensive yet undoubtedly worse 3C?Probably. I don't think he would ever sign there but that wasn't the question. I don't think there would be a guy much more sought after for experience, insurance, and impact for a team. Imagine if Nashville brought in Thornton as a rental for their team this year. All of a sudden RyJo going down doesn't sting nearly as bad and if RyJo is healthy that team has a pretty good #2 punch for their 2nd line center. Again I don't think it would ever happen but if he signed a 1 year deal in an insane world with Vegas he'd be a prize for the deadline. Why?Joe ThorntonWhat exposed player would you expect to have the most value at the '18 deadline (assume LV is out of it then) if you had to choose

Hamhuis could be worth a king's ransom at the deadline unless his game has fallen off a cliff...

Yeah if LV is out of contention what player that they could possibly have would have the most value. Answer: Joe Thornton
I don't think it's realistic but it's a possibility and if that was the case on a 1 year deal he'd have the most value. How dare hypotheticals get in the way of one line of thinking.

In order for LV to trade Thornton, they would need to sign him. That's the whole point of the question.

but if they had him he would be valuable

I can understand why Vegas would want Thornton, but why the hell would Thornton want Vegas?

I look forward to seeing how the players adjust to the concrete backed boards at Rostraver. No bounces and shoulder annihilation. The Kraft Hockeyville money should be used to demolish that place.
