Sunqvist was not going to make this roster. Reaves will. Case closed.

 He puts on the afterburners.

He can't skate though. Just a slug or something. Guy even has enough hockey sense to go glove side on Murray.
Tom Sestito has scored goals in the regular season too.
I mean you can be as delusional as you want, but Sestito hasn't shown a burst of speed like that in his entire life. Sestito also averages 3.24 PIMS/game compared to 1.66 for Reaves. Reaves can skate, has put great effort into becoming more of a hockey player and less of a goon, and is a tenacious forechecker. To paint him as even similar to Sestito is ludicrous.

Like I said, I hope he does well and proves me wrong. I just don't see why he was needed for a team that preached ignoring the extra-curriculars and just playing hockey.

If that makes me delusional, so be it. The add just does not make sense with the way the makeup of the roster has trended for 2 consecutive Stanley Cup wins.

Indeed. The Pens were all business when they dressed Sestito to try to fight Byfuglien/destroy Enstrom's face.

Just went to the Pens subreddit. Holy **** you'd think we sent Malkin to St Louis.

I don't hate it but the guy isn't big so I don't see the adding "size" aspect

Huh? In the world of hockey this dude is pretty much The Hulk.

Haven't ya heard? Botterill was the real GM. Future hall of famer Jim Rutherford is just a delusional old man who doesn't know what's going on.

Maybe players will think twice before trying to get piggyback rides on our captain, if this godzilla goes into the corner with them a shift later.

They're assets in the same way that the change between the cushions of my couch are assets. Reaves was an asset for the Blues, was thought to be enough of an asset that they protected him in the expansion draft, and he's an asset that has played almost 500 total games in the NHL. Sundqvist and the 31st overall pick will be lucky to combine for that number. Everyone is an asset to someone. It's just a matter of how much of an asset they really are. A poor skating, no hands, questionable hockey sense maybe future fourth line center and the former 1st pick of the 2nd round in a bad draft aren't assets with much value.
This. And I think people just like to use the word asset.

Also I can't wait to see people point to this trade if we don't win a third cup in a row as the reason why.

Yeah, it's like suicide watch on all of Reddit right now. Love or hate this trade, it's not like we just blew up the entire team.

The bold part of that post is the single dumbest thing I've read in some time.

This trade is very bad but ultimately it's not determinative of a three peat so ill move on.
@Kraftster too

To be clear, I wasn't bolding that part because I thought it was wisdom....thought it was a weird coincidence that this was written four days ago before this trade was even a rumor.

I am still not a big fan of this trade, all I meant to convey is that it seemed that, at least in the St. Louis market, they were a bit happier with Reaves' production recently than before. Thus, I felt marginally better about the trade.

That make sense?

Outside journalists and fans always bring up how we Pens fans are "spoiled" by the great talent we have seen here in Pittsburgh.

You know how I know we are spoiled:

Half of Pens fans are straight up freaking the hell out over a SWAP OF 4th LINERS and dropping down 20 spots in one of the weakest drafts in history.

We want to win another cup next year right? Well Ryan Reaves will be a much more impactful player NEXT year than Oskar will be, no doubt at all. And likely again in the next couple years if we sign him.

And hey, maybe our best players will get run into the boards a little less often. Even if slightly, that's a net positive for this team

Couple of things - TK tweeted that he loves this trade, and the guy does make a difference to the players on the other team. I'll take his word for it.

Kevin Weeks said the guys in the St Louis locker room love Reeves... so take that for what its worth.

I imagine a trade like this isn't some knee jerk reaction, Sullivan and Rutherford feel like they can get the game they want out of Reeves, and still get that dimension from him that might deter teams like Columbus or Tom Wilson from going that extra.

The Penguins have taken a lot of crap over 2 full seasons, and I think the players know this will help with some of that. I don't think you deter hard hits, maybe even border line hits... but you can certainly deal with post whistle crap, etc.

In the end they moved down spots in a weak draft, and traded a guy that they must not have liked in comparison to the current and pipeline for someone that has a definite purpose.

We slid down 20 spots in one of the more meh drafts in recent memory and upgraded our bottom 6. What's the problem?

Yeah, my initial reaction was "wtf", but once I had a chance to calmly assess, I don't see what the huge deal is. The draft pick movement doesn't bother me at all. And re: Sundqvist...I never really got the hype about him.

On top of all of this gmjr has straight up said they aren't done.

Let's wait until October to see what the team looks like.
