mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness

I counted at least a dozen "fire Rutherford" comments on Reddit this morning, lol.

Dickie's post says it all - I don't recognize more than two names on his list of #31 draft picks. We traded a glorified second round pick in a weak draft and a center who can't crack the NHL lineup for an established player that fits a need.

The bold part of that post is the single dumbest thing I've read in some time.

This trade is very bad but ultimately it's not determinative of a three peat so ill move on.
@Kraftster too

To be clear, I wasn't bolding that part because I thought it was wisdom....thought it was a weird coincidence that this was written four days ago before this trade was even a rumor.

I am still not a big fan of this trade, all I meant to convey is that it seemed that, at least in the St. Louis market, they were a bit happier with Reaves' production recently than before. Thus, I felt marginally better about the trade.

That make sense?
I just found it comical that you went from "drags down everyone on the ice" to "feeling better" because someone on SB Nation said a then 29-year old punch thrower worked on his skating.

That said, do agree with your latest sentiment that St. Louis fan reaction is making things look a little better.

Lots of Blues fans seem pretty upset over losing Reaves, if it helps.

Couple of things - TK tweeted that he loves this trade, and the guy does make a difference to the players on the other team. I'll take his word for it.

Kevin Weeks said the guys in the St Louis locker room love Reeves... so take that for what its worth.

I imagine a trade like this isn't some knee jerk reaction, Sullivan and Rutherford feel like they can get the game they want out of Reeves, and still get that dimension from him that might deter teams like Columbus or Tom Wilson from going that extra.

The Penguins have taken a lot of crap over 2 full seasons, and I think the players know this will help with some of that. I don't think you deter hard hits, maybe even border line hits... but you can certainly deal with post whistle crap, etc.

In the end they moved down spots in a weak draft, and traded a guy that they must not have liked in comparison to the current and pipeline for someone that has a definite purpose.
Nice points, though I disagree that Reaves won't deter hits. People are saying that we got Reaves to protect Sid, but just as importantly, he'll protect Letang. How often have we seen teams throw the puck down ice with the idea that they'll obliterate Letang when he goes to pick it up? Teams are going to be much less inclined to do this when they know the hardest hitter in the league can do this against their own stars. I love this trade.

EDIT: I also love how this trade sends a big "FU" to the NHL and it's garbage officiating.

It's disappointing that we won't get a classic Steigy mental leap and hear him call Reaves Superman.

Don't think he meant height. Reaves is a beast of a man in general.

Not having to hear Steigy is not disappointing.

Sundqvist thrown in to leave open a contract spot? (have no idea where they are on the 50 max)

He's a waiver eligible RFA who wasn't highly thought of by management and wasn't going to make the team.

So, who's got the scoop on this kid? Reddit is freaking out about him in a bad way, so I assume that he'll be pretty good.

Looks like he weighs about 110lbs so he should fit right in.

I'll wager a guess that he'll gain some weight in his 19th year of life in preparation for the AHL/NHL.

So is Lauzon first in line to take over Geno's nickname for James Neal?

He's going to trigger the entire fanbase when he keeps his number when he makes it to the NHL.

:scared:

So is Fleury now "the old 29er"? And if so, does that mean Phil Bourque is now "the older 29er"?

R/hockey is so ready to pounce on anything remotely negative that the Pens do. So much hate and salt going around that they are praying we make a mistep. They'll still say we gave up way too much even while watching Reaves take his lap with the Cup.

This is where I chuckle. Thinking a fourth liner is going to make or break this team. Get real.

Gotta admit, this is a lot of turnover for one year.

GMJR has 3 Stanley Cups as a GM and Botterill has 0 as GM.

They'll be just fine.

That is what happens when you put a good crew together, train then well and then have success. Everyone wants to hire them and being that you are good owners amd management you let them take those promotions.
