Rutherford: Having two top goalies 'hasn't worked … as well as I thought'
Despite the fact I like having the two top goalies, it’s difficult when both goalies are used to playing the majority of the games,” general manager Jim Rutherford said Monday. “You get into weeks where they’re splitting and going every other game. That hasn’t worked, at this point, as well as I thought it would.

RIP Fleury as a Penguin.

I wonder if this statement is to get people to come to him with offers...

Couldn't Fleury be had for basically nothing right now?

Fleury to Dallas for Benn 50% retained (for extension) and Niemi 50% retained.

I would think not. He's coming off two really terrific seasons. He has a lot of pedigree. And he's a super talent. Most trades are won by the team that gets the best player in the deal, Fleury is likely to be that best player. The teams I've listed are hemorrhaging goals: Dallas, Vancouver, Calgary all have worse goalies and some on worse deals.

Plus, Fleury is a help to a locker room. People inside the game are a fan of that as well. Especially for what is supposed to be a younger group like Calgary or Vancouver post-Sedins. You need a guy that's been there before and really seen it all.

Fleury's time is coming to an end soon. It sucks, but it is what it is. This is Murray's team in the future.

Fleury would be a disaster on a team with a crap defense.

If you trade Fleury, a competent backup goalie better be in the mix. Jarry needs to stay in WBS, and I honestly don't know who the other goalie is there.

Thank you Jim for listening to me. Problem is we still haven't seen Murray deal with the grind of getting the bulk of the work in the regular season. 40 games in WBS. Total of 43 regular season games last year. He was great last year in the playoffs but definitely wore down. I'm not ready to trade Fleury only to have Murray go into a mid-January slump that sees some Zatkoff clone having to carry the load while Murray pulls his triangle shaped head out of his ass.

Fleury has always played for a crap defensive team, except for a brief period under Therrien and again under Johnston...

Also, we had an 18 year old goalie in the NHL with no goalie coach...let's not understate that too much...I've found that it's never too late for a goalie coach...

We'd need to take one back in a trade. As in, the team we're trading with won't let us walk away without a goalie. Whether that's shitlord Brian Elliott, a reduced price Kari Lehtonen or Ryan Miller's expiring (I think?) deal, we're getting something back...

I can't see Miller willing to be a backup.

Well, it's market. Market dictates everything. If the return for Fleury is Brian Elliott and a #4, then you go screw it, we'll worry about it in the offseason and ride the hot hand right up to the expansion draft...

Now, if you get a situation where you give, say, Fleury and Pouliot for half-price Lehtonen, Antoine Roussel or Brett Ritchie and Mattias Backman...then you go, well, ok, let's just bite the bullet here...

Casey DeSmith, who is WBS property. Sean Maguire just started practicing with WBS after being injured for like a century and enduring a miracle to even be playing hockey. Beyond that there's no other goalies in the Penguins organization at this point. The two in Wheeling are Nailers property.

And I can't see him getting another NHL contract. So, he's in a tough spot. Miller is not good. He's about to lose his job to Jacob Markstrom if he hasn't already. The only thing with him is that he has stated he is not interested in leaving the West Coast (his wife is an actress I think), so he probably won't waive to come here and may well sign in Las Vegas to keep his career alive. Miller is like 200 years old and hasn't been relevant since 2010 probably. He doesn't hold a lot of clout...

Let him go to Vegas. I don't want him to come to the Pens and act like a pouty pissbaby because he's now a backup.

What about Florida and the loony GM there? Luongo isn't getting younger and Reimer has been crap for them. They have some young talent that could come the other way, and it appears they are looking to blow it all up.
