The Caps only have $4.6m in cap space with only 15 players signed.

Montreal shelling out a lot of cash for a goalie who has only ever watched the Stanley Cup Final on TV.

I thought Kuznetsov would get 7...that's a steep price.

Schultz on playing with the Penguins: "It's been unbelievable. It's obviously the best two years of my life... I wanted to come back. It was always Pittsburgh. I'm excited to come back and help the team as much as I can."

Cool.

I don't know why the **** I thought Cole was a UFA this year. Anyway, I'd like for him to stick around too.

Well now he will be the best goalie on a team with zero depth. Congrats.

They had zero depth when he wasn't making money...it's just not a well managed club...they protected their only ticket to the dance, I can't say I blame them...Price erases a lot of mistakes for them...

I'm shocked by the....price, but they're not going to get better by going cheap in net.

If they didn't give him that, I wouldn't be surprised if someone else would have... like mikey said, they protected their best shot at doing something with their team. A goalie can drag a team to the playoffs and possibly through them. Can't blame them for paying him.

Man it'd be nice to get Dumo and Sheary for less than 4M each. Maybe 3 year bridge deals.

My one co-worker who is a wings fan, and enjoys hot takes on most things says we severely overpaid for Schultz.

"severely" is a bit much, but she isn't wrong in concept.

Paying $5.5m to a guy who just came off a 51 point season (in 78 games)? She's just wrong.

9 d-men scored 50 or more points last year. He's paid market value which if we look at the contracts handed out so far is just fine. We can't expect every player to take a discount just because.

Serious question, what happened to him? Was heading towards being one of the best offensive d-men in a long while to a MASSIVE drop off.

They gave him the big contract and expected him to play more even strength time - to which he responded with, "what's even strength?"
