Coach Johnston on Letang: “He has a concussion, so that’s been determined. He’s been released from the hospital."

Josh Yohe: "Pens going with 5 defensemen tonight. Winnik is the emergency defenseman."

Dave Molinari: "Johnston says Winnik told him he played "a little defense" during practices in Toronto this season."

Josh Yohe: "Johnston says Perron is "doubtful" for tonight."

Dave Molinari: "Penguins confirm that everyone on major-league roster would need waivers to go to AHL, which is why that wasn't an option to add defenseman.
Putting Letang or Ehrhoff on LTIR wasn't an option because LTIR doesn't exist when a team has fewer than 10 games left."

#Pens to go with 5 defensemen tonight vs #SJSharks; Daniel Winnik available to play D if necessary, team will be able to recall D tomorrow

So Pens can make an emergency callup tomorrow, after they've played one game shorthanded.

For the Sharks, Vlasic is out. That's as big as missing Letang for the Pens... he would've been constantly on Crosby or Malkin.

I could be wrong, but a concussion severe enough that they took Letang to the hospital for overnight observation strikes me as a concussion that he won't be coming back from anytime soon. He could be out for some or even all of the playoffs.

I was just reading that brain injury symptoms are visible even a few months after a serious concussion. This couldn't have come at a worse time, unless Letang recovers quickly in some sort of miracle. That look on his face still gives me the chills.

4th documented concussion. Which means that's 4 that were actually diagnosed. Who knows if he's had more.

Johnston: Malkin won't play Saturday. Sunday is questionable. Ehrhoff out both games.

Evgeni Malkin: "I came back a little too early and didn't feel good after back-to-back games. I won't play tomorrow (at CBJ), but maybe Sunday (at PHI). "
