During his postseason news conference Sunday morning, Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Johnston said one of the things he plans to do in the next month is visit Wilkes-Barre to watch some of the organization’s young players in high-stakes action.

He’ll see plenty of familiar faces when he arrives.

Two days after its elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs, Pittsburgh loaded up Wilkes-Barre/Scranton’s roster, sending down defensemen Derrick Pouliot, Brian Dumoulin and Taylor Chorney and winger Scott Wilson.

In addition, according to social media reports, 21-year-old center Oskar Sundqvist is also on his way to town now that his team has been eliminated from the playoffs in Sweden.

The arrivals will give the Penguins one of the most talented postseason rosters in franchise history.

That's not even fair, lol. The baby Pens were already rolling and now they just get five very solid players added to that team.

Minor note, Sundqivst's team lost in a six-game final (double overtime loss by the cinderella Vaxjo)...the SHL season is over entirely...

They had to bring in Ryan Parent and Danny Syvret on try-out basis just to ice a full defense while not screwing over Wheeling who is also in the palyoffs.

Syvret is another guy that could pull a Chorney. There isn't much that separates him from being an NHLer I feel...another guy, like Chorney, I was relatively impressed with at the developmental level...

Depending on how far the Baby Pens get, I may make a trip up to WBS to see them.

Or to Hershey if they end up playing the Bears. Hershey is much closer.

Well they completed their sweep of Syracuse (round 1 in AHL is only 5 games).

Yep, listened to the games online. Kapanen had a great first round. Future looking bright.

Only knock has been he is getting pushed around. Hope he can get more strength after a full year in WBS or they give him to Gary Roberts this summer.

Which is why I would have kept him in North America this season. Keep the Penguins organization in control of his on ice and off ice training.

Sundqvist didn't play last night. Pouliot and Wilson each had a goal and an assist. Dumoulin and Chorney each had an assist. Connor Sheary (who I think the Pens absolutely must sign to an NHL deal this offseason) had two goals and an assist. Matt Murray made 33 saves.

Was Kapanen even eligible for the AHL to start the season?

Yes. European players coming from European leagues don't have the same rules as players from Canadian Juniors. So Kapanen and Sundqvist both could have started the season in WBS if the Penguins elected to do so, and not been subject to the 20 year old by December 31st rule.

And it would have only cost a year of Kapanen's ELC if he played 9+ games in Pittsburgh. A year was burnt on Sundqvist's ELC regardless of where he played this year, which has always made the decision to send him back to Europe very confusing to me.

I wonder if sundqvist would have started at 4th line center if adams hadnt been on the team. Id like to see him win that spot next year.

I think the Pens made the smart choice for both Kapanen and Sundqvist. Next year they can develop as top 6 wings in WBS too which is probably the plan seeing as how Rutherford cited making a mistake with Bennett. Of course if they both look better than anyone else at camp in the top 6 then all bets are off because Bennett never really outplayed anyone to get there.

I just don't see any value in waiting to teach European hockey players the North American game or leaving the development of your prospects in the hands of a team than has no stake in their future.

Natural center but played LW mostly this year.

They were still under contract with their teams, though, AIUI

He can play all three forward positions to my knowledge, after learning LW this year.
