The Fall Guy was fun. Not as fun as apes fighting frost dinosaurs but fun nonetheless. Gosling is so damn likeable and he and Blunt have good chemistry. I wasn't expecting the romantic subplot to work as well as it did and that's mostly because those two are great together. The plot takes a while to get moving but once it gets going, it's a fun action mystery that's better written than expected. Solid stunts too, which makes sense I guess. Would watch again.
Yeah, it's as advertised. Agree it takes a little bit to find its footing, but it's a solid ride. Blunt and Gosling especially do the heavy lifting, indeed. Gosling is so likable rn he even makes dirty blonde dyed hair look appealing.

Furiosa…woof. If only the runtime was the biggest of my complaints

The Good: Hemsworth was really good. Really fun, well played and interesting villain. Also the sound design/engineering

The Bad: 30 mins too long, CGI was distractingly bad at times and most importantly…
The plot was incredibly lame and there were no stakes throughout the entire film. Literally from the first scene Furiosa was a ruthless and hyper intelligent special forces combatant. She doesn’t have any character development throughout the entire film.

Hell, one of the few moments of weakness she has in the movie is when she loses the arm and immediately after it happens she one handed drives a motorcycle up a giant mountain that no one else in pursuit is able to and then she builds a robotic arm in the span of 40 days?

Her mom has perfect aim with a sniper and also can catch a a group of bandits. Then Furiosa also has magical sniper and catching-up-to-people powers
that aspect of it was massive and kept me out of the film the entire time. Honestly felt like a super hero movie in a Mad Max setting which was disappointing because of how much I liked Fury Road and the original Mad Max films. While I was watching this it made me want to watch Fury Road again

6.4/10

I also had heard that the movie wasn’t going great at the box office and I wondered why. I know can understand why

Furiosa has great WOM and excellent critical response. But this has been the 'worst' Memorial Day boxoffice in like 30 yrs, in term of ticket sales, so it's not just dystopian prequels that are feeling the crunch.

I think this is also going to be the first summer in like 15 yrs with no MCU tentpole. Not my thing, personally, but I gather that's somehow meaningful.

Meanwhile Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is having a super solid run. Post apocalyptic apes > post apocalyptic cars.

Furiosa is a prequel to a 9 year old film lacking the series titular character. Prequels have not been performing so hot lately (hunger games comes to mind). It’s also rated R and Memorial Day weekend is typically a time for families to go to the theater. Case in point: a fairly respectable opening for Garfield. And yeah, Furiosa didn’t do as well as Fury Road’s opening but not by that much. Fury Road had legs plus it got a boost after the Oscars. We’ll see how Furiosa ends up but my guess is it won’t have the same legs. People are now conditioned to a much shorter wait between theatrical run and VOD. May as well wait and save some money. I’m planning on seeing it this Friday.

Which is wild, since this is exactly the type of movie I'd want to catch in the theaters.

Honestly this is my exception for prequels, since I concur with the trend, prequels are by-and-large snoozefests from a narrative perspective.

FFS, The Fall Guy was streaming 2-3 weeks after US theatrical. My wife and I saw it the second weekend, and I think it was available the next week. What's the point of movie theaters? I loved going to the theater, but if studios are going to keep doing this stuff (ie shortening the rent/own window), then I don't see theaters remaining viable.

I could see that for some movies, but not all. The Fall Guy falls into that category. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Dune part 2, etc. definitely do not.

The Fall Guys flopped hard and pivoted to VOD. I doubt if would’ve went to streaming so quickly if it did better at the box office.

Movie studios really need to figure out how to make movies for less than $150MM again.

I watched The Cruel Sea yesterday, a 1953 British WWII naval film. Very well done, but very much of its age. A contemporary review in the NY Times complained about it being too long at 2:06 minutes.

Unlike the live action movie, I'm excited for this one:

Yesterday I learned that Disney Animation has only had 3 theatrical sequels: Rescuers Down Under, Frozen 2, and Wreck-It Ralph: Ralph Breaks the Internet. That's crazy. Rescuers Down Under is easily the best of the bunch. Considering Frozen 2 is the second highest grossing Disney animated film, we should probably expect more sequels. Hopefully Moana 2 actually has an interesting story to tell. I'm not expecting much from the music considering LMM isn't involved.

Visually, it looks like it'll still be stunning. LMM is a loss, but I think given the main actress can actually sing, odds are that the songs will still be enjoyable.

Maybe. But considering every memorable song from Moana was solely from LMM (Where You Are, How Far I'll Go, You're Welcome, Shiny), my expectations are very low. It'll be like Frozen 2 where you go in expecting Let It Go and leave with Into the Unknown.

It couldn't possibly be like Frozen 2 because, like I mentioned, the main actress can actually sing.

Saying that a three time Tony nominee (one time winner) and the "Queen of Broadway" can't sing is a wild take but do you.

Oh, I got the reference, but I don't want the target of his blunder associated with Moana in any way, shape, or form.
