That means they're fairly distantly related, taxonomically speaking, even though they look so much alike. The major taxonomic ranks go Kingdom -> Phylum -> Class -> Order -> Family -> Genus -> Species. Yeah, alligators and (true) crocodiles are families of the order Crocodilia. I don't know how to put it anther way but I knew that and I still don't get it.
