Getting into the WW1 stuff next. The Martin Luther one is interesting but not the best IMO. Current finishing the Cuba/Bay of Pigs one

The Kahns was just so good. Flail of god badass Mongols.

I'm souring on What I Missed in History Class. Most of the episodes seem to be woman-centric, and then they just did a transgender episode. *yawn* I'm like 17 behind now, about to bail.

Mystery Show is #1 on itunes?! Did I miss something? Anybody still listen? Did it improve dramatically after the first two episodes?

Good question. I haven't listened since the first couple.

Will anybody be subscribing to Howl? As I understand it, the subscription ($5/month) only covers archives of shows like WTF and Comedy Bang Bang (among others), and the newest episodes will still be free on iTunes.

But with podcasts continuing to become more mainstream, it's only a matter of time before the new episodes of the biggest shows are locked behind a paywall. Ever since Serial went crazy huge and Obama appeared on WTF, I've been extremely paranoid that podcasts as we know them will change. Paywalls, media conglomerates like Fox, Viacom or Disney buying established shows, and a change in distribution... It's coming and I'm not going to be ready for it.

I dont think there is a real risk of comics putting podcasts behind paywalls. Maybe less frequent history podcasts though.

Earwolf and WTF just put their back catalog behind a paywall. If it's successful, why wouldn't they put the new episodes behind one as well?

Because growth would cease. Wtf has had old episodes behind a paywall for several years now. Kevin pollak tried to go to a paywall at one point and backlash was insane. He never recovered listeners.

I hope you're right. But let's face it, there's money to be made and corporations are going to find a way to make it.

Howl is an Earwolf creation. If the back catalog route is a success, I can definitely see a gradual climb (every other week behind a paywall) to an eventual full fledged paid subscription service.

Paywalls in general will turn off new listeners, even if it's just the back catalog. I discovered some of my favorite podcasts deep into their run, and to understand the in-jokes or just for entertainment sake, I went back through and listened from the start. Or looked up the "best" episodes and listened to those. I wouldn't do that if they were behind a paywall and I'd likely give up on the show.

Thats how most podcast listeners feel. Comics make a little money off ads, but they do the podcasts to build a fanbase. I dont think theyre interested in turning that off.

Yeah. Again, I hope you're right.

I also forgot to mention that Howl is not only a paywall but you also need the Howl app to access (which is only available to iOS currently). And it's apparently incredibly buggy. I downloaded and quickly deleted the WTF app. I haven't opened my TAL app in months. How is this making it easier again?

Yeah i dont use any of those apps. Also wtf is so hit or miss for me that i wouldnt miss it if it went behind a paywall. Joe rogan, bill burr, and chris hardwich are the big ones i like. None of them need the money. Ari shaffir is another good one and he puts his stand up specials up as podcasts occasionally and talks about them, so i dont think there is a risk of him doing it.

It was a really sad attempt by Scott Aukerman on this week's CBB pretending like the paywall was for our benefit. If anyone fell for that, I hope they don't have kids.

I'm worried what will become of Bill Simmons' podcasting future. His Cousin Sal NFL line podcasts are some of the best bits of hilarity I've ever heard and are really fun. Not to mention that he has a good array of other podcasts too. I enjoy pretty much all of his stuff except when he interviews athletes because they're always dull.

I'm not sure how it'll work with Grantland people though. Like, will he be able to do podcasts with Andy Greenwald or Zach Lowe anymore?

This weeks This American Life, 419: Petty Tyrant, is superb. The story is pretty entertaining on its own, but it's a great case study for why unions are absolute garbage.
