Mark Walker (R-N.C.) told NBC News that it appeared the "gunman was there to kill as many Republican members as possible." Walker, who was at the practice for the upcoming annual congressional baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia, confirmed he was "shaken but okay."

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) recounted an "odd" encounter he had as he was leaving the field just minutes before the shooting: "There was a guy that walked up to us that was asking whether it was Republicans or Democrats out there, and it was just a little odd," DeSantis told Fox News.

Huh? All of the signs so far, in this story, are pointing to a gunman that was deliberately targeting Republican politicians for murder. That's hardly an unrealistic assumption at this point. I don't think anyone is saying there is a conspiracy here.

That being said, the vitriol, rhetoric, and hatred coming out of some elements of the left wing have been getting more and more violent for several years, and it's only picked up since Trump was elected. This attack is not surprising, in that respect.

Why are you guys going on the defensive already? Is it really that hard to believe that some left-wing nutjob would deliberately try and kill Republicans? Believe it or not, violent rhetoric and thoughts are not the sole domain of the evil right-wing.

No one ITT is saying there is some grand conspiracy to kill Republicans. But you *do* understand that it's very likely in this scenario, right?

If a shooter would have opened fire on a bunch of Democrats playing baseball, I am fairly certain there wouldn't be as much skepticism of the shooter's motive in here.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “New Day,” Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) credited Capitol Police officers on the scene for preventing the shooting at a Congressional baseball practice from turning into a “massacre.”

Rand said, “I can tell you, that I think with absolute certainty, nobody would have survived without the Capitol Hill Police. They saved everybody’s life. Incredibly brave and deserve everyone’s praise, because, with this guy, who knows what his — how heavily armed he was, but nobody else had a weapon. So, he was just killing everyone — he would have. … They deserve our gratitude for saving — it would have been a massacre without them.”

I was standing at home plate and he was in the third base line,” Bishop said. “He had a rifle that was clearly meant for the job of taking people out, multiple casualties, and he had several rounds and magazines that he kept unloading and reloading.”

The shooting went on for roughly 10 minutes, with some accounts putting the number of shots fired around 100. Five people were injured, including two Capitol Hill police officers and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, of Louisiana. The suspect was also shot.

In any event, the shooter was not killed, so I'm sure we'll learn more about this nutjob soon.
