Most forms of music have a genealogy that sort of explains why a certain genre sounds the way it does. Rock, for example, grew out of big band-era swing, jazz and blues. But there really doesn't seem to be any purpose to EDM or electronica. It's just organized noise.

I picked jazz. I can't stand it.

I also loath that weird screaming metal where is just sounds like they're grunting. That crap gives me a serious headache.

I've heard lots of electronic music that is very harmonious that follows directly from "big band-era swing, jazz and blues".

I can't stand modern country, but it's sad to me that country is actually getting more votes than pop. Oh well.

I'm surprised country is winning. Isn't Pennsylvania pretty much the south?

The makeup of this board is hardly representative of central PA

I figured this would be a country music bash thread. I voted metal.. but I like some metal also. I like all of those genres. As for country, I'm guessing many think country = luke bryan and florida georgia line. While true, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash and Chris Stapleton, among others, are also country.

i actually see it as more pure than other genres. it's basically just enhanced rhythm, right?

That song was recorded in 1971 and wasn't released in the US until 1973.

Remember now that this was still the early days of FM radio. Back then you could listen to AM, FM, or recordings (records, 8-track, or cassette - Reel to reel if you were an audiophile). Those were your only sources for recorded music.

KQV was probably the most listened to music station in Pittsburgh.

That song clogged up the "air ways" in 1973. It was a horrible horrible horrible time for popular music.

I honestly believe that Hocus Pocus and "Popcorn" by Hot Butter help expedite the adoption of the FM format.

God hearing those songs over and over and over would drive anyone crazy.

Those were the glory days of FM radio though. Most DJ's worked "Free Form", they could play pretty much anything that they wanted. Lots of great music was uncovered that way. Of course there was payola too unfortunately.

most electronic sub-genres grew from disco.
