We owed a couple thousand, but oddly are getting over a grand back from local taxes. We didn’t change anything from last year. Just bizarre.

Yeah, that's weird. We owed $74 in local taxes because of my wife's 1099-NECs. Given it's just a 1% of wages I wonder how you got a refund, there is no place to put in deductions that I could see.

Local or State?

We got a nice state refund this year due to the dependent care credit? I think

Local refund would be if you had PA UE credit - union dues, educator expense, etc.

I can't imagine the shitstorm that would happen here if we had to pay local taxes.

Hey, stuff might actually work if they had such taxes. Likely not.

Our state comptroller and treasurer are fighting over who's to blame for $1.8 billion sitting in a pass-through account. No one knows where it came from or where it's supposed to be. That's fun.

Or, you're getting City of Pittsburgh (3%) withheld, vs. most localities (~1%).

I was surprised when I moved to MA hat there were no local taxes here. The state tax is on the higher end (6.25%) but without local taxes we end up pretty middle of the road for overall local/state tax burden.

Informed Delivery says we have a letter from the IRS coming from their Kansas City office today. Taxes were filed back in February and the refunds are long since spent. What in the fresh hell is this?

Is it because we have a minor that is an adult (as of today)? Is it an audit? Something to do with my parents' estate/inheritance? Reddit says it's verification of signing up for ID.me, which we haven't done. I actually started attempting to that today - upload driver's license, record you live via your smartphone, etc. - but it failed out because of the poor internet I get on wifi in my office.

Informed Delivery is a blessing, but this is agonizing trying to figure out what this is.

Knowing the IRS it's something to do with 2022 or 2021.
