It does check the "cheap" box, and with the .45 Colt round it would knock someone down.

I think every time I've ever seen one it was inside a pawn shop.

Honestly though, in my limited experience, my buddy's Remington .357 with a 6? inch barrel is the smoothest firing, easiest to control gun I've used. There's something to be said about pure metal and few moving parts.

I have a Springfield xdm 40 for my concealed carry... I really don't like it but I can't afford to spend 700$ on the sig I want right now

I'm a huge fan of my Sig 226 Elite because it's a total of 4 parts. Just smooth, clean, and simple.

I'm also a big fan of my Midsize Springfield Arms 1911 Range Officer. Thing is a beast but expensive like my 226.

I got my permit after I moved here but I've had the firearm for quite a while, it just never came out of a lock box in my room when I lived in california

So, I'm setting some money aside for a pistol. Looking for something to use just as home defense. Any rec's on a decent, yet affordable handgun for said purpose?
I'm personally fond of revolvers for a home-defense role, because a revolver can live in a drawer or safe for years without maintenance or lubrication, and there's still not much of a chance it will fail when needed. Semi-autos these days are very reliable, but let one sit for five years while its lube gums up and dries, and there's a non-zero chance that it might malfunction when needed. A S&W 686 or a Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel loaded with .38 Special self-defense loads would work great in that role.

If you want a semi-auto, there are a plethora of good choices. I'd go with a polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol: SIG P320, Glock 17 or 19, S&W M&P, Ruger American Pistol, Springfield XD(M), etc. They're all good guns. If you have smaller hands (like I do), or a spouse with smaller hands might need to fire the gun too, then the single-stack guns from Kahr are great guns and a lot easier to grip than a fat double-stack gun. Kahr offers a lower-priced "value series" that omits the fancy laser engraving on the slide and uses barrels with conventional rifling rather than polygonal rifling. The CW9 is 7+1 in 9mm, and the slightly larger CT9 is 8+1. I've owned a Kahr PM9 in 9mm for many years now, and I'm really fond of their products. My next purchase gun is probably going to be another Kahr.

I actually do enjoy cleaning guns; there's a certain zen to it. But time flies and we all have other stuff in our busy lives, and the next thing you know you last cleaned that gun two years ago.

For ease of cleaning, Glock is the way to go. Simple to field strip, and very little lubrication required.

Can't believe no one mentioned a 1911 of some sort. It's like a glock but for men.

I have one, wouldn't recommend it to a new shooter or someone looking for a home defense weapon to just throw in a drawer.

Good news indeed. The new law gave the Game Commission the discretion to decide what game semi-autos could be used for, and I was somewhat worried that the Game Commission might try to drag its heels and authorize semi-autos only in limited circumstances, such as allowing them only for small game. Nice to see that doesn't seem to be the case.

You'd get double the range with a 308

I know a couple that do, and I've tried it. I didn't like it.
