We have a guy in my department who doesn't like working from home, but since he was full time remote, he moved to a city where we didn't have an office. We then acquired a business unit in his city where he was able to get an office, but literally worked with nobody related to our department. They are now closing this office and making everyone full time remote, so he is paying out of his own pocket for a shared office space so he can work somewhere other than his home.

I get it, and having been WFH for a couple years already pre-covid, I do get stir crazy, but that seems a little much to me. I used to travel once or twice a month but we've been on budgetary travel restrictions since June and I am bouncing off the walls. I'm not getting my own office space across town though.

It will be interesting in the next few years to see what happens with major city downtowns and office parks ala Southpointe. As office leases come up for renewal I assume companies will cut back. Wonder how these landlords and property owners will adapt.
Converting into housing as there is a shortage of that.
Mrs Tif's company - a Fortune 500 biotech firm - is looking into doing this. Their mothership is a 120-acre campus that's across the street from an two large apartment complexes as it is. And it has been around 80% vacant since March 2020. Outside of the scienc-y R&D stuff that's done on-site, the business folks just don't really go in any longer. (Mrs Tif went in yesterday for what amounted to 3 hours, but that was the first time she went in like 2 months)

I like my situation. Go into the office 2 days a week and WFH the other 3. It's a perfect balance. I got stir crazy and honestly think that played into my mental health earlier this year when I was fully remote. But at the same time, I don't want to go into the office 5 days a week like the old days. My company is still doing focus groups and seeing what works best even though 85% of people were happy with the current situation.
We're supposed to be three in, two at home. But I think I would be fine if that were flopped like this to 2:3. As it is, I'm the only one even making any real consistent effort at appearing in person, and I only go 1-2 days a week.

It's because no one besides you wants to go into the office.

When Trump did his announcey thingamajig, apparently people tried leaving while he was speaking but were blocked by staff. Literal captive audience.

It's still early days post-election, so there's plenty of opportunity to shift (with the knowledge of how quickly the GOP ship changed course post-1/6 [basically once Kevin McCarthy visited Mar-a-Lago and bent the knee to His Mighty Orageness]). But the early indications are that this insanity-based all-the-elections-we-lose-are-stolen shtick may have finally run its course. Whatever mojo Lake thinks she has does not appear to be enough; like 10 people showed up to her 'stop the steal' rally yesterday...... however, one was wearing stars-and-stripes MC Hammer style baggy pants, so there's still style points to be had.

Problem with working at work: every office has "conspiracy theory guy"

I had to navigate a discussion about how ftx was laundering money through Ukraine to finance the Democratic super Pac money

When I work from home, my dog does not provide such ideas

I posted about this conspiracy theory a few days after the election. It's crazy how these ideas spread and are accepted.

He seems far more confrontational than Pelosi:

House dems just need to sit back and let the remaining MAGA reps do their thing. The crazier the better.

If Jeffries had been Speaker for the past two years, Dems would have kept the House.

During her floor remarks today, Pelosi said she’s “enjoyed working with three presidents” as speaker, before referencing accomplishments from the Bush, Obama and Biden eras.

Left unsaid was the fact that Pelosi served as speaker under four presidents, not three.

She's considered one of the most effective speakers in terms of keeping the conference together.

We'll see the opposite when and if McCarthy takes over.

Sort of secure the majority. The Democrats have now won more elections, but one of them was a dead guy, one of them is the new lieutenant governor who has to resign his seat, and one of them was also elected to Congress will not take her seat. All of those three are safe Dem seats, but the Dems won't actually have more members in the PA House until there are three special elections to fill those seats, which will likely take several months. Reps still control the PA Senate 28-22. So we will likely have deadlock both in PA and in Congress (which I view as a good thing).
