The Daily Caller is reporting that the baseball shooter had a "kill list" on his person listing specific congressional Republicans, several of which were at the baseball practice in question. It looks like the shooter not only set out to kill Republicans, he set out to kill specific Republicans. Names on the list supposedly include Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks, South Carolina Rep. Jeff Duncan, and Arizona Rep. Trent Franks, who are all members of the House Freedom Caucus. Duncan and Brooks were at the practice.

@Willie Kool

CONRAD ROY: How was your day?

MICHELLE CARTER: When are you doing it?

CONRAD: Since you don’t get your snapchat anymore, I sent them to you.

CARTER: (Smiley face) My day was okay. How was yours?

CONRAD: Good.

CARTER: Really?

CONRAD: Yes.

CARTER: That’s great. What did you do?

CONRAD: Ended up going to work for a little bit and then just looked stuff up.

CARTER: When are you gonna do it? Stop ignoring the question

I still don't really see how you can defend that as free speech, but I was never in that boat to begin with.

Those texts are chilling--that is definite sociopathic behavior. If she wouldn't have been arrested/charged for this, easily could have seen her killing her child or something in 5-6 years.

So suppose that Person A is an American in North Korea with pamphlets he's written denouncing Kim Jong-Un and promoting freedom, democracy, and openness. He's thinking about distributing them on the streets of Pyongyang.

Person B is a friend in the U.S. who can somehow text with Person A. The texts go like this:
Person A: How was your day?

Person B: Have you done it?

Person A: I went out with the pamphlets with every intention of distributing them, but had second thoughts. Still thinking.

Person B: You have to do it. Go do it now.

Person A: Yeah, I'm still not sure.

Person B: Think of America and freedom and democracy. Think of the children! You have to do it!
* Cut to video of Person A being executed by flamethrower with Kim Jong-Un himself pulling the trigger and laughing all the time.

Is Person B guilty of a crime?

Count me in with WK. There is no law in Massachusetts making it a crime to encourage or persuade someone to commit suicide. Manslaughter generally requires that the defendant "cause" the death in question, but it is unprecedented to say that words are weapons or can directly cause death. That notion is not supported by law. There is also no recognized exception to the First Amendment that would permit the criminalization of the defendant's speech in this case. The conviction should be overturned on appeal.

I worked in a factory gluing IV tubes together right before joining the Marines. I haven't had a job since then that I didn't want, and I really hope it stays that way. I think to elevate yourself out of something like that you have to be willing to sacrifice *something*, and I don't think that mechanism exists in the majority of people. It's not meant to be condescending, some people are just content with their station, which is fine. Right up until they start thinking they're 'entitled' to more when they look around at their peers who have progressed. Which brings us back to the 2br apartment...
You say this like it's only possible to get stuck at a horrible job if you're lazy and uninspired

It's really a shitty arrogant viewpoint
You could interpret it that way if you want. Most reasonable people wouldn't so I'm not going to break it down for you.

How is this materially different from Godric telling dodint to go kill himself?
How is it the same?
If dodint was as much of a weak minded fool as that kid, it could have been. Where do you draw the line?
I draw the line right about where he was about to do it and decided against it and then she convinced him to follow through.

If she convinced him to shoot up the school (and there was text to prove that she was involved and suggested a plan as to how to do it) and just before he did it he was having second thoughts and she talked him into doing it, would she be an accomplice to that?
This is a bad bad equivalency and you are a bad bad equivalencor.

He hurt himself and only himself. That is 20,000 leagues away from shooting up a school. "What if she convinced him to make a BLT" is even a closer analogy.

She is a dumb person. A mean person. A...bad person? Sure. But it's not a crime to be an dadhole. This is some slippery slope stuff right here. I hope this is overturned.

I'm not much of a cable news watcher, but I definitely value Farid Zacharia and Smerconish (separately) on CNN. Beyond that, I watch CNBC.
Occasionally Hardball, if I want to soak in the classic Joe Biden style Democrat voice; everyone else on MSNBC Is like a Code Pink rally.

Also: I'm still a bit freaked out by that gunman going after folks at a baseball field. (There's something really messed up in our country, if that seems like a viable move to someone.)

If all goes well, assisted suicide will be legal all over too. If I get to really bad parts of a terminal illness, you're damn right that I want to fade away after a large dose of morphine.
Opiate overdose is actually still "painful" or uncomfortable

Barbiturates would be the way to go

I was thinking about this too. If we had something like the Doomsday Clock for the likelihood of US civil war, I'd bet that civil war clock would be the closest it's been to midnight since the late 60s/early 70s with all of the riots and protests surrounding the civil rights movement and Vietnam. Not that I think we're especially close to civil war, but it feels like more of a possibility than at any other point in my lifetime.

I was reading an article in the NYT this week that cited some studies that show that now political party is the biggest dividing line between social groups. People were more likely to agree to negative assessments of members of the opposing political party than members of other races or religions.
