Yeah, I think if you are literally holding a press conference, you've put your identify out into the public.

I would note that in terms of defamation law—which distinguishes between people who are "public figures" and people who are not and applies a higher burden proof for defamation of public figures—Ms. King-Slutzky would likely be considered a "limited-purpose public figure” under Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323 (1974). In that case the SCOTUS held that someone who “voluntarily injects himself or is drawn into a particular public controversy and thereby becomes a public figure for a limited range of issues” is considered a public figure for speech related to the particular controversy and has thereby assumed the risk of defamation to a certain extent. I personally think the same sort of distinction sould apply to any claim of personal privacy.

I mean, at the end of the day it's a student in her early 20s making really ridiculous statements that she'll...hopefully regret in her future

she and her family are almost certainly going to receive a lot of death threats and **** for this which is still undeserved, regardless of how ridiculous her demands are

You mean people might dare to suggest that she doesn't have a right to exist? Heck, some of those callers might even demand that she and her family should move away from where they currently live. Boy, those would be totally outrageous things to say.

Can you imagine the reaction if the powers that be decided that Michigan should be returned to NA Tribes that originally inhabited that land and the current landowners had to leave.

How would that go? And that was only a handful of centuries ago, not a few thousand years.

If "forcible relocation of the people who already live there" was such an outrageous barrier, Israel wouldn't exist in the first place.

Jews have continuously lived in the Levant for millennia, long before Islam was even a religion. By contrast, there has never been a Palestinian state at any point in history.

While I was theoretically raised as a Presbyterian, I would say that I'm an agnostic and not any flavor of Christian.

For somebody that is supposedly smart, that's really **** dumb. :face:

This is fine. We should reward judges for being aligned idealogically.

One of the billion things plaguing the country seems to be the politicization and buy-ability of federal judges. Jon Oliver has covered it pretty extensively the last few months honing in on Clarence Thomas specifically but it seems to be a pretty large issue and one that affects both left and right leaning judges. The fact that RBG was a celebrity is not a good thing

but of course we’re in a situation now where the judges won’t actually police themselves and Congress is so stupid that you’ll likely never get bipartisan legislation. Looks like we’re f*cked!

also, seems like there’s “escalation” regarding Israel/Palestine protests in UCLA. I don’t think King Slutsky realizes how she and her ilk, along with crazy pro-Israel protestors, are making things so much worse. I feel like the flames are being fanned by bad actors like the Russians or something. At this point it feels like it’s easy to get people really riled up and pissed off and lose all sense of sensibility in the US

the last few years have felt like the “slow motion” one would feel before a car crash or something. Except it hasn’t felt like the car has crashed yet. The US really feels like it’s deteriorating. I’m not sure how people can be too hopeful about the future

We are at the point in the slo-mo car crash where the vehicles have physically collided but your feet and legs haven't been crushed yet.

Police shoot and kill armed student outside Wisconsin middle school this afternoon. No one in school was hurt. Speculation is kid was trying to get in.
