We were engaged for about 15 months. When we planned the bridal party about 12 months before the wedding, we had four on each side. Two of my groomsmen were dating two of the bridesmaids. About 10 months before the wedding, one of the couples broke up, so we mixed up the pairs so they didn't have to walk together and they said that was fine with them that they would be adults about it and soldier on. We continually checked in on them to make sure it was still fine over the next 10 months and they both assured us it was. Then BAM, 16 hours before the ceremony - bridesmaid backs out. What was the bridesmaid's reason for said bailage? Like I said, there are acceptable reasons, and they are generally limited to things like unexpected dismemberment. If she just up and said, yeah no, that's not forgivable.
You're taking what is meant to be the most special day in the life of a, presumably, close friend and putting them under undo pressure, and shifting focus away from the couple (read: bride).

You should have been ruthless (like a hockey GM ) and ditched them from bridal party upon their split.

I was at a wedding over memorial day weekend and I was talking to one of the bridesmaids. She was at a wedding the day before (2 weddings, one weekend... yikes) and she said her husband was in the wedding party. All 4 of the dudes in the wedding party used to live together, and there was this one girl that was friends with all of them/dating one of them that ended up sleeping with each one of the 4 at some point in time. I guess one of the invited guests who was not a groomsman brought her as a date. She was telling me the drama was through the roof.

I used to date a girl who's roomates fiance broke it up 10 days before. It was during the 08 Finals and some guys they all knew offered up a ticket to one of the games. I remember sitting in the living room and he was like "well since I was supposed to be getting married in 45 minutes, I guess I'll go to the game. Felt crushed for the guy. They ended up getting back together and married, but I dont think it lasted long. Maybe like within the year and a half after that she popped up on my facebook with a difference last name and it wasnt his.

You'd think her breaking it off 10 days before the wedding would be a sign of some sort...

A friend of an ex cousin had a destination wedding in Mexico and the groom and his family didn't show.

I hate when people say **** like this. It's easy to read a story like that and say "but what about that obvious red flag", sometimes bruh the heart wants what the heart wantsYou'd think her breaking it off 10 days before the wedding would be a sign of some sort...

okay. Let me rephrase. Should my wife had broken it off 10 days before my wedding, I would have peaced the f*ck out because I feel that guy is insane to take her back.I hate when people say **** like this. Oh, geez. This might seem like 20/20 hindsight, but I agree with C-dawg. The only really effective way to deal with that is to delete the (ex)couple from the party. Keep them as guests - each with their own +1 - but kick them out of the party.
Getting married on your own dime a little bit older in your life has its perks. As we got into the planning, we came to agree that bridal parties don't really offer anything of value. They are really just tremendous headaches multiplied by the square of the number in the party. So there were no bridesmaids or groomsmen in our wedding.

That was our initial thought. We approached both of them individually and asked if they still wanted to be in the party or if they wanted to be a guest. Both vehemently stated they were good with staying in the party, but walking separate. They actually both admitted if we wanted them to still walk together, they would be fine with that. We checked in on them monthly about this...at least monthly...for 10 months.
Some good came out of it though. It is easy to weed shitbags out of your life around your wedding.
