Joe vs. the Volcano didn't answer this. So I reached out to the writers of that particular episode and got a near-immediate response...There are a lot of Simpsons nuts here, so I'll give it a try...
In Bart vs Australia, Bart makes a bunch of calls to the Southern Hemisphere and in one scene there is a man floating on top of a house through a sea of lava...he goes to answer a pay phone that he's floating by and falls in and dies...
What is that referencing? It's bothered me for like 25 years and I just can't figure it out...

My life is complete now...I have no more questions of the world. Enlightenment age complete.

Yeah, but I feel oddly good about this relative non-answer...it ends the pursuit, it ends me asking strangers for perhaps 1950's and 1960's movies that this could be referencing, etc. I'm all set. I wonder about nothing any longer...
