My no-go genres are Rap/hip hop and pop, and I would include "pop country" in the pop category. There's a huge difference between pop country and stuff like outlaw country (e.g., Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, David Allan Coe, Billy Joe Shaver, Steve Earle, Chris Knight, Ryan Bingham, Lucinda Williams, etc.). Pop country is just crappy pop music with a twang and steel guitar.
100% agree. I've been going through a country phase and love most of the people you named. I cannot stand pop country.

Self-referential 'outlaws' that make their living as artists immediately are discarded. Unless you want to make the argument that their audience are outlaws, but even then.

Emo is probably under Indie. And there is good emo out there. Bright Eyes, DCFC, etc.

I can't remember the exact sequence of events, but I think it's more coincidental than anything. I've always liked Johnny Cash and added him into my main Pandora station, learned about a few more country artists and went on from there.

Apparently I also love bluegrass...

Listen to David Dye - World Cafe on public radio sometime.... It's not something I'd want a steady diet of, but it's enjoyable in smaller doses.

I originally was going to write "whatever Enya is" in that category but I learned that World is kind of its own stand alone category

I don't think most of the artists referred to themselves as outlaws. Although a few of the people I listed have done prison time, including David Allen Coe and Merle Haggard. Haggard would often tell a story about a time he was talking to Johnny Cash, and Haggard mentioned that he really enjoyed Cash's 1958 concert at San Quentin prison (which preceded the more-famous concerts at Folsom). Cash thought for a second and said "Merle, I don't remember you playing in that concert." Haggard replied, "John, I was in the audience" (for robbery and attempted escape from another prison).

I'm old and not familiar with EDM. Are there any popular artists doing this? Is is music to take drugs to?

Read a small New Yorker article recently about it. It's some pretty dystopian ****. DJ's controlling people with buttons lol.

EDM isn't a genre. It's sort of equivalent to saying "music with guitars", which would not be a very helpful description.

Electronic is a little vague, but so are all the other categories.

I can see why anyone over the age of 30 dislikes Eletronic. It's kind of like how rock was in the 60s and 70s to the Greatest Generation. It's something the older population wasn't used to hearing for most of their lives.

My generation likes it because it fits in nicely with the technology age that we're in.

I'm pretty sure you can take drugs to most music too

I accidentally skipped over it because I refuse to acknowledge it, but put me down for a vote against techno crap.

they are, but my thinking was that someone that didn't like rap also wouldn't like hip hop and vice versa. I figured that they were close enough together that they didn't warrant their own categories.

I strongly considered splitting out R&B though

Can you give me an example of an EDM artist?
