Hell yes, I'm jealous. But she is going to drive me crazy being retired.

Yeah... especially in education. This sh*t is starting to creep into higher ed as well. Has my wife thinking about pursuing a career in industry rather than academia. You described 99% of jobs.Just driven out of the profession by craven administrators, dimwitted politicians, and entitled ignorant parents.

it’s sad to think about but tbh not sure why anyone would willingly get into teaching right now. Pound for pound might be the most frustrating career all things considered

Lunch break for career day at kindergarten. So far only one kid asked how much money I make. Told him I make enough. Hahaha

You should have told him $100, just to see what he'd respond with. Kids that age have no concept of "a lot" or "a little" money.

Yeah this was lost on me at first among other things. When I first signed up I asked for a projector figuring I'd make a PowerPoint presentation. Then it dawned on me that they can't even read lol.You should have told him $100, just to see what he'd respond with. Kids that age have no concept of "a lot" or "a little" money.

The next person to ask me one minute after a call starts if I’m getting on it gets punched in the face. One of my employees asked me at 9:30 this morning if I was getting on a 9:30 call. Yeah that’s gonna cost you one star in the ratings.
Five minutes sure, but I’d have let you know I’ll be late.

I can't stand people that start meetings early. 9:25 or 9:28 for a 9:30...and then when you pop on at 9:30 and they're talking about whether you're going to join or not...die in a tire fire on two counts you ****** crumbs...

I've joined multiple meetings over the last few weeks where people were in a conversation about basketball that dragged on. STFU so we can get the meeting over with.

Like I said. Muscle memory kicked in.
I brought two handheld scanners w me and got a dev buddy to load up the kids day app my team built a few years ago. Showing a YouTube video of us delivering Panda Bears. 20 minute intervals every half hour or so.

This and the leaders making passive aggressive “good to see some of you today.” You’re not going to guilt me into turning my camera on if I don’t have to. I just sat through an operational excellence meeting while watching my neighbors 80 year-old mother power wash a deck while wearing a cardigan and a long skirt. Corporate America is for the birds.

I have a weekly standup where the first 15 minutes or so is comprised of nothing but small talk. It's almost like a game to see how long they can keep it going before there's an awkward silence, which is the cue to start the meeting. The longest it's gone is about 25 minutes. The meeting is only scheduled for 30.I've joined multiple meetings over the last few weeks where people were in a conversation about basketball that dragged on. a principal software engineer who I had hired (and known at our previous company) just resigned. tbh at this point I can’t imagine much more of the team staying. Place was a shithole and I tried as hard as I could to keep the team away from the bullshit but now the floodgates are open and everyone is gonna realize they can do better
when I first joined, my boss said to me with no sense of self-awareness, that “Americans don’t want to be software engineers anymore”. He’s referring to the fact that 75%+ of the engineers they had in staff at that point were Indian. I explained to him that that’s because good engineers don’t want to work for companies with shitty engineering cultures. Turns out that’s so very true

I would say there's nuance to this idea, it's more active. It doesn't really matter who you know, it's who knows you. And that's a function of making yourself stand out. (In a good way)That phrase of “it’s not what you know but who…” is true in the sense that if you’re likable as well as hard working you’ll be much better off.

I receive random invitations to be paid for various things that 90%+ end up just being scams. Like there was one offering to get me a paid gig as a board member for an organization. The catch? I have to pay to get on the list first and then they'll find me a position. The more I pay, the quicker I get on a board. Seems like a pay to play scam, so I didn't even respond.
Anyways, now I got an email that seems pretty straight forward. They're asking me to consult for a client that's looking for information about a field that I'm actually in... so to the googles I go to see what this company is about. Looks like they largely just have you fill out a "screening" form that has questions like that which you'll be expected to answer during the consultation and they just rip you off by taking your answers there and presenting them as their own.
Pretty sneaky, sis.

I had a job where we would often talk to poor or poorer people. They literally don’t notice it. I’d wager if you were interviewing someone and heard that in the background they don’t even register it any longer.Amazing how many people sit under a smoke detector with dying batteries during a phone interview.
