Caps are kind of irrelevant at this point. They would need a handful of guys on EL contracts to excel and for Ovechkin to be better. I think their forward group is fine, and Holtby will atleast play well in the regular season. They probably need Orpik to get a long term injury and some d-men to come out of nowhere (I have no idea what defensive guys are in their system).

I think Columbus, Toronto and TB will be the toughest tests in the east next year.

Ovechkin-Kuznetsov-Burakovksy
Vrana-Backstrom-Oshie
Connolly-Eller-Wilson
Walker-Beagle-Barber
-Smith-Pelley

Orlov-Niskanen
Djoos-Carlson
Orpik-Bowey
-Lewington

Hotlby
Grubauer

They could do worse than betting on Vrana and Bowey...though it's been a minute since I've seen Bowey, lost track of his progression a bit...

TSN circ-jerk coverage had everyone on the podium talking about how it was important for him to leave some money on the table.

McDAvid was grinning when he was asked about the cap implications.

Also: Chiarelli is an idiot

Kovalchuk's decision to postpone his NHL comeback by at least one more season, however, might not have come without some prodding from the Russian president's affiliates, according to Sport-Express foreign correspondent Slava Malamud.

"Gold in election year is a huge priority for Russia," Malamud tweeted Tuesday. "Pressure to stay was put on Kovalchuk by Putin's inner circle."

That's a hell of a signing considering his quality of play.

just a friendly reminder that a cap-strapped washington team signed a scoring forward, in the prime of his career, in a contract year, to an 8 mill/yr deal. and that player had 19 goals in 82 games.

i like kuznetzov, but it is now sinking in how silly that contract is. and citing KHL leverage as reason for the price tag? GTFO with that...wait until it's actually a thing before you start worrying about that kind of behavior. also...if you have a player who is going to threaten to go to russia, he might not be the best investment.

or whatever...keep capping, caps.
