Just a little bit of bad hockey karma. Or are we supposed to act like he wasn’t a jackass now that he has to retire early?

Well, he was a massive homer. But unless something has changed, they couldn't determine the cause of his speech issues...which is scary. Hope he gets better.

He looks like the kind of person who sucks at Halo and calls everyone else F’s 3 seconds before the lobby ends.

This just seems mean. Especially coming from the "#SaveTheCrew" city.

Hell of an organization you had there, Meruelo.

What's the backstory on that? He started working for another team, and Yotes management got pissy?

I think it was from their old arena. I guess when they got the boot they threw away everything and weren't allowed to hang it up in Mullet/didn't bother asking.

It always sucks to see a team move. Let’s not act like hockey ever “worked” in Arizona though.

Let's not act like it was ever given a chance for success...

Pittsburgh ended up becoming a hockey town in some respects...its youth programs are producing legit talents now...but it also fell into bankruptcy in the same decade where it won 2 Cups and was actively making the playoffs.

Arizona got little in the way of superstar talent, they got put into a basketball arena, then got kicked around to every town that wasn't where the fanbase lived, poor owners, poor managers, tons of turnover...their regional sports network went out bankrupt...etc. etc.

A 52 minute flight away in Vegas, hockey is booming...they're also in the middle of a desert. They also don't have a hockey background.

This is why judging things purely by result isn't enough most of the time...the process is important. Arizona/Phoenix had a lousy process, the NHL had a lousy process that dragged on this pain for too long perhaps too...I don't think they necessarily got a fair shake, I don't think they generally expanded their platform for luck any either...but it's too hasty to say that "Arizona can't do [this]" - there will be a team back in Phoenix in the next 10 years.

It worked as far as growing the game there and getting a new market to buy in on hockey. It did not work because the owner is (was) a doofus and horrible businessman who didn't pay his rent so nobody wanted his team to play in their city. The NHL is leaving a big market (nearly 5 million people) for a much smaller market in Sal Tlay Ka Siti (1.3 million). On the plus side, they won't play in a college arena.

I didn’t say the “it didn’t work in the desert” line because that wasn’t the truth. It didn’t work in large part because it was never a priority for the NHL or for Arizona.

I hope Phoenix gets the Coyotes back at some point but I really hope the league doesn't give Meruelo the team if he gets that arena built. Something something definition of insanity.

this is as good of a place as any to point out that the definition of insanity is not actually doing the same thing over and over agan and expecting different results
