Mikey, I'm assuming that you've reffed games. How would you have handled someone stickhandling through your legs on a breakout like Draisaitl just did?

Assuming you're talking about the zone entry...I'd probably react the same way, just try your best to get out of the way. Get your feet up and get your body out of the assumed path.

I am the chattiest ref I know. So, I communicate with guys about where I am gonna go and where they should go.

Last weekend, I got into some situations in the corner that were sudden change. And I'll slide up off the boards as I see the change of possession and yell, "you got the wall, you got the wall...wall is yours."

And guys talk back to you too "thank you" or "good talk, ref" or next time you're on the bench side, they say, "hey, good communication out there, keep it up."

Same thing when guys are in a back skate or whatever. "Hey, I'm right here. Hey 4's, I'm on your back."

But yeah, that's a hazard. I ref at a much slower level thankfully, so it's pretty easy if you have a bit of hockey sense. But it happens...bad bounce or whatever...and you just try to give them as much predictable room as you can...

How much do you wish you could make like the refs of the pre-90s and grab the glass and hop up on the boards?
