Well then you should have signed an extension

The better direction is trade him then re-sign in the offseason.

Rust is moving into his old house. I don’t think there was ever any intention of coming back.
Also, that quote is sort of annoying from Jake. He intention was to stay if he was paid what he wanted.

I would prefer a more honest answer. Would anybody really be mad if he was like “I’m not just doing this for money… I’m doing this for a **** load of money.”

What will he get on the open market? 10mm? He's not worth that.

Pasta got $11.25 mil. He's a regular 100 point capable player. I don't think $10 mil is super reasonable, especially if he wants to be in a competitive landscape...

he could team up with Johnny Hockey on the uber-competitive Columbus franchise

It's more the aav + term, yeah? I mean, they could offer big money over 4 years, but Jake ain't taking anything that short. He gonna get paid, and that's perfectly fine.

No serious talks since last smmer for whatever reason.

Also, he’s trying to not completely burn all the bridges with fans here. He says he intended to stay and everyone blames Dubas. If he says, “I couldn’t wait to jump off this sinking ship and pad my bank account” people are burning his jersey. It’s PR more than anything else.

Hmm that's a good debatable topic, because right now? I'd much rather have Nylander.Neither is William Nylander. I'd rather have Jake. What will he get on the open market? 10mm? He's not worth that.

That's what gets me about all this spin. Jake wasn't going to ever stay if he wasn't going to get paid what he wanted. If the Penguins wouldn't offer him what he wanted, then it was more mutual than anything.Rust is moving into his old house. I don’t think there was ever any intention of coming back.

I think term is more the issue to be honest. I like Jake, but signing a 30 year old to an 8 year deal likely with a NMC/NTC...and a high AAV on top of it....not a fan. Some team will offer that though...and he will cash in and good for him on that he deserves it. I just think it's not in the best interest of the Penguins future to offer that sort of deal.

The way I see it is this: you get Bunting, who is a pretty darn good hockey player, and you take the difference in salary between what he makes and what Jake gets next season on the open market, and you can go sign another player. Plus, you get the prospects and the pick they got in the trade.
So, for the money you would have spent on one guy, you get two, plus the other assets acquired.
I realize everyone gets the warm fuzzies over Jake, but Dubas made the right move.

That's correct and I agree. I don't want another NMC on the team. It's not like this team was winning the playoffs with Jake recently. He provided the only chance to get assets, and use that 6MM on the team to spread out the roster a bit. Unfortunately, if they wanted to make him part of the core, someone like Geno would have needed to go, I think.
This comes across as more a business decisions and team build decision than anything. I love Jake, and management was told to keep the core together, so it's only a matter of time things start moving forward.

He was asked, during the post game interview, whether he would consider re-signing in Pittsburgh this summer, when he reaches free agency. That's what gets me about all this spin. He said, “I don’t know. We’ll see how this year goes,” he said. “I really like it in Carolina.”
I'm taking that as he has no intention of re-signing here, if that's even on the table.

If the Penguins can move either rakell or rust, I'd entertain the 7 x 9-9.5 it would require. Can't be locked into 3 guys over 30 for that long though.
However I'm not sure why he would want to come back to an aging, fading team who could be a playoff team in the next 1-2 years if a lot of things go right.
Carolina has a ton of expiring contracts. They can pay him what he wants if he likes it there. Or he can go cash out for $70M somewhere and chill

Of course, his dad works for the Coyotes...they don't even have half of the salary cap tied up for next year yet.

FYI, if you've bought tickets or used TicketBastard to attend a game, the Pens sent out a survey regarding the in-arena experience.
