Yeah think the primary concern isn’t the overall record. IMO it’s where the production is coming from.
The important players (Keller, Cruz, Hayes, bednar, suwinski, reynolds, jones) haven’t taken enough steps to get excited. I’m glad they extracted some good starts out of Marco, falter, Martin, and jones. I’d like to see some of the VIP guys carry the load.

Last year was more fun. They were hot all of April and immediately fell flat when the calendar turned to May. This year you all have already given up and the month isn't even over.
Thanks for ruining April Pirates optimism.

baseball seasons are long, I'd bet both of those things reverse course a bitYeah think the primary concern isn’t the overall record. IMO it’s where the production is coming from.

They are essentially doing the reverse Hurdle/Searage. Where Hurdle and Searage refused to let elite pitching prospects play to their strengths by forcing them to execute a narrowly defined strategy (see Cole and Glasnow).
Shelton and Haines have adopted a hitting approach that takes major league teams 2 weeks to diagnose and exploit. While last year it took a month, this year they got it by the end of week two. And this is not an issue with talent, while Suwinski was never really a prospect, Davis and Cruz were bats with position questions, results should not be regressing. This is at least partially due to them trying to execute an idiotic strategy and forcing them into pitchers counts. It's just beyond aggravating to think that something like this would work consistently at the major league level. Teams have sophisticated software programs that can diagnose your tendencies in 30 seconds. Just beyond exasperation at this point.
The glaring difference being that Hurdle and Searage actually achieved success with their pitching approach, so there was at least a viable reason for them to stick with it through some struggles. Haines and Shelton have achieved about six weeks of results in 1+ season. And they also sucked in 2020-2022, but no one was paying attention and I don't know if Haines was around and if they were doing this never swing strategy then.

He's surpassed Strasburg as far as pitching prospects imo. Let's see if they don't **** it up (they probably will)

1-1 in the top of the 6th. Walks first batter. Taken out after 61 pitches. Bullpen gives up 4. Pirates lose 5-1.
This will be nothing like Strasburg striking out 15 Pirates or whatever the number was in his debut.

I think Snell was gone by then. A no strikeout outing feels like a Jeff Karstens masterpiece.

Jeff karstens got the start
Evan meek and Javier Lopez relieved.

The middle of that order……jfc. Rowdy would fit in with that cast of characters

Matt Capps got the save? He was gone by 2010? Wow I feel old.
Lastings Milledge batting in the 3 spot... hard to believe we weren't very good

I was at Strasburg's debut. It was awesome, we had tickets over the nationals bullpen and watching him warm up was insane. Nationals fans were playfully jeering me that a Pirates fan was closer to him than they were. good times....good times. one of the coolest events I've been to.

So no optimism left for this year minus Skenes debut, right?

If they don't improve on last year's record then they need to clean house.
