He might galvanize the team. If I had the best pitcher of ever I might have a little extra swagger

Remember the pittsburgh media said we **** up not taking Dylan crews

Excitement of Skenes and Jones aside. It’s frustrating that this ownership group won’t do right by them. Absolutely no faith in that side of the house.

I was Crews until i listened to some MLB prospect podcast with Callis on it. Point was basically - Pirates will never otherwise have a chance to get an impact starter of this caliber.Remember the pittsburgh media said we **** up not taking Dylan crews
I think it just became obvious by draft time that Skenes' floor was higher than any of us could have known. He basically entered the '24 season ready for the majors. April was just extended spring training, I really don't think Crews or Langford are close to him. And that's not to say that those guys won't be perennial all stars, just that Skenes is that good.

We spend like 87% of the days in this thread complaining. We get one day to be excited about and some clown drops down from the rafters to remind us it doesn't matter because ownership stinks

I mean, as far as I can tell, the biggest whiff was settling early for Tellez. Guys like Bellinger and Hoskins were holding out and weren't going to sign the contracts they did when the Pirates made that move. Not that it was right, just that they didn't read the FA market well this offseason. But, I think the moves for Perez and Marco were okay, but as we can see, they did not need to do anything drastic at SP (which is what everyone assumed needed to happen).Excitement of Skenes and Jones aside. It’s frustrating that this ownership group won’t do right by them. Absolutely no faith in that side of the house.
1. The willingness to move Brubaker for a young prospect makes sense, all of their interesting hitting prospects (besides Termar who is struggling) are at Low A or the FCL. So that Kiner dude is another name in that mix.
2. Keller is starting to standout as a workhorse, that he's not going to be asked to be the ace is valuable. Despite Jones' stature, he has pitched a lot of innings since being drafted in 2020 (so just 3 seasons in the minors). I think his durability risk is of no unique concern. And Skenes is just a freak, it think a major injury would be more of a fluke happening than pitcher wear/tear. (all goes to say, there is reason to think that penciling these guys in through 2028 isn't the more outlandish presumption).
3. They are more or less committed to Hayes, Reynolds, and Cruz long term. Joe is old but has plenty of control years as well. And Endy will be back next year to likely be the primary catcher. So that's some premier defensive positions covered (3B, SS, C). I agree that I have no faith in them doling anything out to address RF, 1B, 2B, and DH, but these should not be hard to fill with players that don't have < .600 OPS. Guess, just saying that their margin of error for improvement is effectively infinite considering how secure the rotation has become and how pathetic the production they've gotten from bat-first positions has been.

Yeah, he was bad. Cost Skenes a perfect 6 innings, and may have cost him 1 more inning.
I sorta hate the idea of robo umps, but challenges are a necessity at this point.
I kinda liked the idea Capps floated yesterday. Give the umpire the pitchcom so he knows what type of pitch is coming. I'd imagine that knowledge would make it significantly easier to call balls and strikes. You could see O'Nora flinch a couple times as he was processing what just happened. Being able to know the expected movement of the incoming pitch would allow them to set their eyes ahead of time rather than figure out how the 101mph pitch started middle third on the knees and ended up outer third at the knees.
I thought that was an interesting and easy to implement enhancement.
