Yeah, that's a wild way to pronounce both of those words. What a deep valley of emphasis using the incorrect vowel in both haha

Let the record show that i believe that the measurement of pittsburghese isn’t the use of yinz. The best measurement is to see how much aw you can fit into words like hospital

I would agree with Mr Roo. Yinz is just colloquial-speak, whereas the random and unwanted insertion of 'aw' and 'ah' into words is more ingrained into the vernacular. When I embarked on my de-yinzer-fication in high school that was by far the hardest aspect to eliminate, and yet is the quickest to return in an immersive environment (e.g. on the phone w mom).

My dad purposely rid himself of his farm boy southern accent in college.

A mixture of self-hatred, insecurity, and frustrated elitism. (Just a hunch.)

I remember taking a concentrated effort in high school and college to eliminate the accent totally. Years later when I got into the corporate world in a sales role I let it creep back in because it seemed to help me connect with the people I was selling to, a know your audience type of thing. It’s not insanely thick in everyday life but certain words like iron (comes out as “arn” half the time) or tiger (comes out as “tagger” at times) do creep through. What prompted you to do that?I would agree with Mr Roo. The same reason that network news anchors don't want to have regionally identifiable vocal traits. Consciously or not, people judge you on your accent. If you plan to live and die within 50 miles of your high school, it's probably not something you'll encounter much or have to account for.

PB's story is a good example of what I'm talking about, just working in the opposite direction.

I apologize for the heartless bastard lawyer reaction, but holy crap, now that's a great lawsuit. Giant steel drum "escapes" from a construction site, rolls several hundred feet down a hill, goes through a fence, and squashes a pedestrican on the sidewalk. That's a res ipsa loquitur case right there.

Apparently the original report was that it fell on her head, not rolled her over.
